Autumn Activities - How to Encourage Seasonal Learning

Autumn is here and it’s a great time of year to encourage learning inside and outside the classroom. We wanted to share some of our top activities to get kids learning and interacting with this lovely time of year, so wrap up warm and get stuck in.

It’s important to keep children aware of the changing times of year and a good place to start is in the classroom. From simple decorations through to outside activities a variety of subjects can be covered such as literacy, numeracy and art.

See our top three ideas to encourage Autumn learning inside and outside the classroom:

  1. Create an autumn themed reading area – Use wall decorations or wall displays to help the children interact and personalise the space. Make this into a fun art activity by asking the class to create a hand print tree to finish off the area.
  2. Go on a nature walk – Set lots of mini tasks for the class for the duration of the walk. Fun little learning activities such as counting different plants and trees can be used to encourage observation and recording skills.
  3. Get the class to identify different types of creepy crawlies – Make a list or draw different types of creepy crawlies and ask the class to identify them, a great way to encourage interaction and group learning.

Don’t forget you can continue to encourage your child’s learning at home, see below our fun and exciting activities to help reinforce seasonal learning at home.

  1. Make Autumn Collages – Each time you go out ask your little one to collect lots of different leaves, conkers, bark or twigs that interest them and store them at home. Once you have a good collection you can help your little one to create a fun autumn mood board.
  2. Weather Watch – A great way to help children learn about the changing seasons and weather. Get your little one to help create small cards for each type of weather such as rain, sun and clouds. They can then use these to record the weather for each day.
  3. Create Leaf Prints  - A simple yet fun way to help encourage seasonal learning, collect a bunch of leaves from outside and experiment by painting them all different colours. Once you have painted them press them down onto a clean piece of paper to see print the leaf has made.
